Tell me more:

Commercial awareness is essential for all aspiring legal professionals in all specialisms, whether barristers, solicitors or legal executives. Understanding the business context behind legal issues allows lawyers to give practical, relevant advice, anticipate client needs, and make informed strategic decisions.

It goes beyond knowing the law. It’s about grasping the commercial, financial, and operational factors that influence clients’ choices. Lawyers who combine legal expertise with strong commercial insight are better equipped to build client trust, stand out in interviews, and succeed in the competitive legal profession.

How does it work:

The Commercial Awareness Club generally meets online on the final Thursday of each month (third Thursday in December) at 7.30 pm on Zoom, giving members the opportunity to tackle real-world legal and business challenges.

7 days prior to each session, members will be given a bundle with a commercial news story or fictional commercial problem. At the session, members will be split into small breakout rooms to discuss the commercial implications of the challenge set for that session. There will also be an optional task(e.g. a presentation or interview-style question) if you want an extra challenge.

At the conclusion of each session, the entire cohort will be brought together for a group conversation led by commercial solicitor, Hayley Dove.

Members can join at any time, and progress is recognised through certificates that are awarded periodically, based on attendance and participation.

What exactly is commercial awareness?

Commercial awareness is understanding how law interacts with business, clients, markets, and commercial decision-making. It’s about seeing the bigger picture behind legal problems.

Do I need any prior commercial knowledge to join?

Not at all. The club is designed for beginners through to advanced learners. Each session includes prompts, guidance, and group support so you can learn as you go

What happens in a typical session?

You’ll receive a task bundle 7 days before the session. At the session, you’ll:

- Join a small breakout group

- Discuss the commercial implications of the problem

- Optional: attempt an additional challenge to further test your commercial awareness

- Rejoin the full group for a discussion led by Hayley Dove

What kind of problems or news stories do we work on?

Examples might include:

- High-profile business disputes

- M&A deals and market trends

- Ethical challenges

- Regulatory changes

- Landmark Judgments

- Fake but realistic “commercial problem” scenarios

Will this help with training contract or pupillage applications?

Yes: hugely. Members will develop the skills most firms and chambers assess including:

- Interview-ready commercial analysis

- Ability to discuss business news confidently

- Understanding client decision-making

- Better examples for competency answers

Many members do reference it in applications because it evidences:

- Commercial awareness

- Independent learning

- Consistent professional development

Is this suitable for complete beginners?

Absolutely. The club is structured so all levels can contribute. Beginners often progress the fastest.

Can non-law students join?

Yes - commercial awareness is relevant to all career paths.

Do I have to speak in the breakout groups?

No. You’re encouraged to participate, but you can observe until confident. Many members gradually build up to contributing.

Reviews

Joe Pursehouse

Future Pupil and Advocacy Club Member

"I'm writing to share some good news: I have received an offer of pupillage.   This is an amazing opportunity for me, and I wanted to extend my thanks to you and the team at Advocacy Club for all that you have done to support my development as an advocate over the last two years.   As a non-student career changer, I simply would not have had the opportunities to practice and compete without the existence of your Club.   The AC is one of a kind and I know I will be recommending it to any aspiring barristers I come across for many years to come."

Amelia Thomas-Wilson

Law Student

“I wanted to take the time to say I am, as well as many others I’m sure, grateful that this event (the Northern Pupillage Fair) has been established. Many aspiring barristers cannot attend the London pupillage fairs due to financial constraints and caring responsibilities so this event will open up invaluable networking opportunities for those based in the North. Thank you, Speed Mooting for levelling up the playing field and I look forward to attending in September.”

Jo Anne Pugh

Dean of BPP Law School

“There are relatively few pupillage fairs, and most are either delivered online or are hosted in London. So, we didn’t need to think twice when we were asked to support this much needed event”.
