Speed Mooting Winter Cup

We will be holding three individual competitions at the end of 2020. For the first time ever, the Speed Moot will take place virtually on Zoom. Read below for details.

All places in the three competitions have now been filled. We will look to run further competitions soon.

National Speed Mooting Competition Winter Cup Series 2020

Sat 28th Nov 2020 - Law undergrad/GDL competition
Sat 5th Dec 2020 - Law undergrad/GDL competition
Sat 12th Dec 2020 - BPTC/LPC/Masters competition

About the competitions

The National Speed Mooting Competition Winter Cup 2020 will consist of 3 separate competitions on three dates. Choose the date most convenient to you. The first two competitions are open to any law undergraduate or GDL student nationwide. The third is open to Bar Course, LPC and Masters students. Participants enter as individuals rather than teams and represent themselves and not their university. There is therefore no limit on the number of students that can enter from any given institution. You can only enter on one date though.

The moot problem will be based on a simple point of law. Submissions will be limited to 7 minutes per mooter (hence the name Speed Mooting). This will include the time for intervention. Judges are encouraged to ask only one question, unless there is a specific need for more questioning. The bundle will be sent to participants on Saturday 21st November 2020. This means that if you are in the first competition, you have a week to prepare. If you are in the second competition, you will have 2 weeks to prepare. If you are in the third, you have 3 weeks to prepare. The bundle will include all case law and legislation. Pre drafted skeleton arguments will be included in the bundle. This means that the competition will not involve any drafting or legal research and mooters will be tested on their oral advocacy alone. The competition is judged by practising barristers, solicitors and BPTC/LPC graduates.

How it Works

There are three separate competitions. Each will take place on Zoom. The dates are:

Saturday 28th November 2020 9:30 am to 2:30 pm (law undergrad/GDL students)

Saturday 5th December 2020 9:30 am to 2:30 pm (law undergrad/GDL students)

Saturday 12th December 2020 9:30 am to 2:30 pm (BPTC/LPC/Masters students)

Competition format

The target size for each competition is 32 mooters. Everyone that signs up will moot in the competition. The competition will take place over the course of a single day. We will therefore go from having 32 competitors all the way to having a winner in a single day. This will work out as 5 knockout rounds.

Additional features on the day

Participants will be looking to gain some value from the competition if they spend time preparing for the competition and are eliminated in the first round. To add value to the competition, there will be a Q&A session with practitioners. Students will be able to put questions to the panel in relation to pupillage/training contract applications, advocacy/mooting tips and life in practise.

Prize

The winner of each competition will receive a £75.00 Amazon voucher. The runner up of each competition will receive a £30.00 Amazon voucher.
