The Northern Pupillage Fair 2026: Why You Need to Be in Liverpool This September
You’d be forgiven for thinking that the legal world begins and ends in London. There’s a certain gravity that pulls every aspiring barrister toward the capital, as if the only way to secure a pupillage is to spend four hours a day on the Tube and pay £9 for a lukewarm pint.
I’m here to tell you that’s rubbish.
In fact, some of the most complex, high-stakes, and rewarding legal work in the country is happening right here in the North. From the bustling chambers of Manchester and Leeds to the historic legal quarters of Liverpool, the Northern Circuit is a powerhouse. And if you want to get a foot in the door, there is one date you absolutely cannot miss: Saturday 5th September 2026.
The Northern Pupillage Fair is back, and this year, we’re taking over Liverpool.
The Logistics: No Excuses!
Let’s get the "boring" bits out of the way first (though when something is free, it’s never really boring, is it?).
When: Saturday 5th September 2026.
Time: 10 am – 3 pm.
Where: The Liner Hotel, Liverpool (L3 5QB).
Cost: Absolutely free.
The venue is literally a stone's throw from Lime Street Station. You could roll off a train from Manchester, Preston, or even London, and be at the fair before your coffee gets cold. The Liner Hotel is also famously shaped like a classic cruise ship. While we can’t promise a voyage to the Bahamas, we can promise a journey toward your career at the Bar.
What I learned: Never underestimate the power of a local event. While everyone else is fighting for a thirty-second window to speak to a distracted recruiter at a massive London fair, you’ll be having actual, human conversations in Liverpool.
Not Just for Finalists: Who Should Attend?
A common mistake I see every year is the law student who thinks they shouldn't attend a fair until they are actively filling out their Gateway applications.
"I'm only in my first year," they say. "I'll go next year."
Wait until next year, and you’ve already missed a year of building rapport. The Northern Pupillage Fair isn’t just for those in the final stages of their BPC. It’s for:
First and Second-Year Undergraduates: Start learning the names of the sets you like. Find out what they actually look for in a mini-pupillage.
GDL/Conversion Students: You’re on a fast track. You need to catch up on networking, and this is the most efficient way to do it.
Career Changers: The Bar loves maturity and life experience. If you’re moving from another industry, come and talk to barristers about how to frame your previous life as an asset.
The "Just Curious" Crowd: If you’re still deciding between being a solicitor or a barrister, come and feel the vibe.
What I learned: The most successful candidates are often the ones whose faces are familiar to the members of chambers long before the interview stage.
Networking Without the Cold Sweats
Networking has a bad reputation. People hear the word and imagine standing in a circle of strangers, awkwardly clutching a business card and trying to sound like a 19th-century philosopher.
At Speed Mooting, we’re all about lowering the pressure. The Northern Pupillage Fair is designed to be approachable. These barristers aren't there to grill you on the finer points of land law or the latest Supreme Court ruling on easements. They are there because they want to find the next generation of talent for their chambers.
They want to know if you’re a person they can spend time with in a robing room. They want to see courtroom confidence, which, ironically, starts with the confidence to say "Hello" in a hotel ballroom.
Advocacy and the Speed Mooting Connection
You might be wondering why we, at Speed Mooting, are so passionate about this fair. It’s simple: advocacy is a practical skill, and so is navigating the profession.
Participating in a moot is fantastic for your CV, but the fair is where you learn the "unwritten rules." It’s where you hear the "off the record" advice that you won’t find in a prospectus.
When you combine the networking skills you gain at the fair with the technical skills we teach: like how to think on your feet and handle judicial intervention: you become a triple threat.
If you’ve been practicing your submissions in our clubs, use this fair to practice your "elevator pitch." Who are you? What are you passionate about? Why the North?
Practical Tips for the Day
To make the most of your trip to The Liner on the 5th of September, follow these simple rules:
Do your homework: Don't walk up to a specialist criminal set and ask if they do much maritime law. Spend ten minutes on their website before you approach the stand.
Quality over Quantity: You don't need to talk to every single person. Having three meaningful, ten-minute conversations is worth more than collecting thirty pens from sets you'll never apply to.
The Pen Rule: Actually, do collect the pens. You can never have too many pens.
Dress the part (mostly): You don't need to wear a three-piece suit if that's not you, but look like someone who could be trusted with a client's liberty. "Smart casual" is your friend.
Ask about the culture: Ask the junior barristers what their first year was really like. Was it supportive? Was it a lonely slog? Their answers will tell you more than any brochure.
What I learned: The best question you can ask is: "What’s one thing a candidate did in an interview that really impressed you?" You’ll get a different, brilliant answer every time.
Why Liverpool?
Aside from being the home of Speed Mooting (and let’s be honest, that’s a pretty big draw), Liverpool is a city with a deep legal heritage. The courts here see some of the most significant cases in the country. It’s a city that values straight talk, resilience, and wit: traits that define the best advocates.
By holding the fair here, we’re making a statement: the future of the Bar is diverse, accessible, and geographically inclusive.
Final Thoughts
The journey to pupillage is a marathon, not a sprint. It can be exhausting, and at times, it can feel like you’re shouting into a void. Events like the Northern Pupillage Fair are the fuel stops. They remind you that there is a community waiting to welcome you.
Whether you’re a local student or coming from further afield, come to Liverpool this September. Bring your questions, bring your enthusiasm, and maybe leave the nerves at the door. The North is waiting for you.
See you at The Liner!
