Pupillage Fairs: Why They’re Actually Worth Your Saturday (and How to Ace Them)

February 26, 20264 min read

Pupillage fairs are often dismissed as "just a place to get a free tote bag and some brochures you’ll never read."

If that’s your outlook, you’re doing it wrong. These fairs are the ultimate cheat code for your legal career.

It’s Not Just About the Stationary (Though the Pens are Decent)

I’ve been on both sides of the table. I’ve been the wide-eyed student trying to look "commercial" while balancing a stack of flyers, and I’ve been the one behind the stand, answering questions for six hours straight.

The biggest value of a pupillage fair isn't the paper you take home. It’s the "vibe check."

Every chambers has a distinct personality. Some are incredibly formal and traditional; others feel like a tech startup with more Latin. You cannot get a sense of that culture from a glossy website or a 200-word "About Us" section on the Pupillage Gateway.

You need to look a junior tenant in the eye and ask them what the coffee is actually like in the robing room.

The Myth of the "Perfect" Candidate

Many students stay away because they feel they haven't done enough yet. "I’ll go next year when I’ve won a national mooting competition" they say.

Nope!

Pupillage fairs are for everyone, from first-year undergrads to career changers who haven't touched a textbook in twenty years. In fact, going early gives you a massive advantage. You learn what chambers actually want, rather than what you think they want based on some dodgy forum post from 2014.

Practising barristers are there to help. They want to find the next generation of talent. When you realise they are just normal people who happen to be very good at arguing, it's much easier.

How to Stand Out (Without Being Weird)

Standing out at a pupillage fair is an art form. You want to be remembered, but for the right reasons. You don't want to be "The Person Who Spilled Coffee on the Head of Chambers" or "The Person Who Asked About the Pension Scheme Five Minutes into the Conversation."

1. Do Your Homework
Don't walk up to a set of chambers and ask, "So, what do you guys do?". Use your phone. Look them up. "I saw your chambers recently handled that big judicial review case, how did the junior find the research process?"

That shows initiative. That shows you’re a pro.

2. The 60-Second "Who Am I?"
Have a brief, casual summary of your stage in the journey. "Hi, I’m Sam. I’m a second-year at Leeds, and I’m really interested in your clinical negligence practice." Short, sweet, and gives them a hook to talk to you.

3. Quality Over Quantity
It's okay if you don't speak to every single person. It’s better to have three meaningful, 10-minute conversations with sets you actually care about than thirty 30-second interactions where you just grab a leaflet.

4. The Follow-Up
If you have a great chat with a barrister, ask for their name (or check their badge). Mention that conversation in your pupillage application later. "Speaking to [Name] at the Northern Pupillage Fair solidified my interest in your chambers because..." That is gold dust for recruiters.

The "Don'ts" of Pupillage Fairs

To ensure your Saturday isn't a total wash, avoid these classic blunders:

  • Don't dress like you're going to a nightclub. You don't need a 3 piece pinstripe suit, but "smart-casual" usually leans more towards "smart."

  • Don't ask about the salary immediately. Yes, some pupillage awards are £90,000. Yes, that is a lot of money. But lead with your passion for the law, not your passion for a mortgage deposit.

  • Don't be a "Leaflet Ninja." Grabbing a flyer and running away without saying hello is a wasted opportunity.

Plugging the Best Event of the Year

Speaking of fairs, we aren't just talking the talk. We are walking the walk.

We host the Northern Pupillage Fair, and it is, quite frankly, a cracking event. If you are anywhere near the North of England (or even if you aren't, trains exist!), you need to be there.

Why? Because the North has some of the most prestigious, high-earning, and incredibly friendly chambers in the country. And even if you're set on the London life, we've convinced some London Chambers to come too! Our fair brings them all under one roof just for you.

Full details for our 2026 fair are coming soon, but pre-registration is already open at speedmooting.com/pupillage-fair. It’s low-pressure, high-reward, and we promise the atmosphere is more "supportive community" and less "The Hunger Games."

Final Thoughts: Just Show Up

The hardest part of the Bar is the sheer volume of "No's" you will receive. It’s a competitive, tough, and sometimes exhausting road.

But every "Yes" starts with an interaction. It starts with you being in the room.

Pupillage fairs are one of the few places where the gatekeepers of the profession intentionally leave the gates open and invite you in. Don't let that opportunity pass just because you wanted to stay in your pyjamas.

Get your suit dry-cleaned, print a couple of CVs (just in case), and come say hello. We’ll be at the Speed Mooting stand waiting to meet you.

See you there!
