A Day in the Life of Speed Mooting
If you ever wondered what a “normal” day looks like running Speed Mooting… the short answer is: there isn’t one.
But today has been a pretty perfect snapshot of what life looks like behind the scenes.
A Slow Start (With New Glasses 🤓)
The day began not in a courtroom, not on Zoom, and not buried in emails ... but at the opticians.
I popped out to pick up my new glasses (very glamorous, I know). There’s something oddly satisfying about putting on a new pair and suddenly being able to see everything in HD again. A small win to start the day.
From there, John and I headed for coffee and breakfast. One of the perks of running a business together is that we can occasionally start the day like that: planning, chatting, inevitably discussing work anyway, but doing it over good coffee and a sausage butty.
We both work long hours, so carving out that little moment before the day properly begins feels important.
Recording Episodes 99, 100 & 101 🎙️
After breakfast, we headed into town to record three episodes of the Partners in Crime Podcast.
Episodes 99, 100 and 101.
Recording in batches is one of the ways we stay consistent. With a weekly Friday release schedule, planning ahead is everything. Today was a big one though because Episode 100 is a milestone.
One hundred episodes.
When we started the podcast, we had no idea how far it would go. Now, here we are: triple digits.
To mark the occasion, we did what any serious legal professionals would do…
We wore Speed Mooting coloured party hats and popped a bottle of prosecco.
Not champagne. Prosecco.
Do you really think we were splashing out on champagne? Absolutely not. We’re celebratory… but we’re also practical.
Episode 100 was genuinely special to record. There’s something surreal about reflecting on how much has grown: the community, the competitions, the Advocacy Club, the Commercial Awareness Club, the Northern Pupillage Fair, and the podcast itself.
It felt like a proper moment.
A LegalEx Follow-Up Meeting
From the studio, we went straight into an in-person meeting with a company we met at the recent LegalEx conference.
Conferences are always interesting with lots of conversations and lots of ideas, but the real work happens in the follow-up. So those conversations matter.
Back Home: Emails & Admin
After that, it was home time, which doesn’t really mean “switching off”.
We caught up on emails (there are always emails). Competition queries. Advocacy Club questions. Fair enquiries. Sponsorship discussions.
Running Speed Mooting isn’t just about events and podcasts. It’s logistics, spreadsheets, judicial recruitment, invoices, social media scheduling, website updates… and replying to messages from aspiring lawyers who just need a bit of guidance.
It’s a lot.
But it’s also why we do it.
6:30pm – Blog Writing & Pancake Plans 🥞
I’m writing this at 6:30pm.
In about half an hour, we’ll be making pancakes because it’s Pancake Tuesday and traditions matter.
Then later this evening, we’re hosting the debating session at the Advocacy Club.
That’s one of my favourite parts of the week. Seeing members step outside their comfort zone. Watching confidence grow. Seeing people who once “just observed” now volunteer to speak.
That’s the real milestone to be proud of! :)
The Reality
Some days are intense. Some are chaotic. Some are spreadsheet-heavy and less glamorous than they look online.
But days like today have a mix of creativity, strategy, celebration, community and pancakes.
And tomorrow? We’ll probably be back to judicial recruitment, course creation, and planning the next big thing.
But for now: pancakes first.
