Inside the Legal Skills Academy: Developing Real Legal Skills
Let’s be honest for a moment: law school does a brilliant job of teaching legal principles and case analysis, but there is often less opportunity to develop the practical skills lawyers rely on in practice.
You can spend years learning legal doctrine, yet the first time you’re asked to stand up, explain an argument, respond to a question, or present an idea clearly, it suddenly feels like you’ve been dropped into deep water without a life jacket.
I remember my first mooting competition. I spent a long time researching a niche point of contract law. I had a bundle that was bursting at the seems and a word-for-word script. The moment I opened my mouth, my submissions came out at one million miles per hour.
It was a tough moot with zero training and, when I received the result, not much fun.
That experience is exactly why we created the Legal Skills Academy.
The goal was simple: create a place where aspiring lawyers can build real professional skills in a supportive environment, without the pressure and intimidation that often comes with traditional competitions.
A Programme Focused on Practical Legal Skills
The Legal Skills Academy is a structured professional development programme designed to help aspiring and junior lawyers develop the skills that matter most in practice.
Rather than focusing purely on academic knowledge, the Academy focuses on the practical abilities lawyers use every day:
advocacy and oral presentation
clear communication
commercial awareness
professional confidence
thinking clearly under pressure
In other words: the skills that help you succeed in interviews, in applications, and ultimately in practice.
Learning by Doing (Not Just Reading)
One of the biggest barriers to advocacy training is the amount of preparation typically required.
Traditional mooting often means spending hours researching cases and drafting submissions before you even get the chance to practise speaking.
In the Legal Skills Academy, we take a different approach.
We provide all materials in advance, including the facts, bundles, and legal framework, so that members can focus on the most important part: developing the skill of advocacy itself.
There’s no need to spend an entire weekend buried in legal research just to participate in a training session.
Instead, you can focus on how you deliver an argument, how you respond to questions, and how you persuade an audience.
It’s the difference between reading about swimming and actually getting in the pool.
Two Live Sessions Every Month
At the heart of the Academy are two live training sessions each month.
These sessions are designed to give members consistent opportunities to practise and improve.
Core Skills Sessions
These sessions focus on key professional skills such as:
public speaking and communication
commercial awareness
debating
legal reasoning and persuasion
interview and professional presentation skills
Think of these as the sessions where we break down how lawyers actually communicate and think in practice.
Legal Advocacy Sessions
These sessions allow members to put those skills into practice through exercises such as:
speed mooting
submissions advocacy
witness handling
practical advocacy scenarios
Members speak, practise, receive feedback, and gradually build the confidence that only comes through repetition.
A Library of Online Courses
Alongside the live sessions, members also receive access to a growing library of online training courses.
These courses allow members to continue developing their skills between sessions, covering topics such as:
advocacy fundamentals
legal communication
commercial awareness
professional development
This means members can continue progressing even when they can’t attend a live session.
The Academy is designed to support continuous development, not just occasional events.
A Structured 12-Month Development Pathway
The Legal Skills Academy isn’t just a collection of individual sessions.
It’s designed as a structured 12-month development pathway that helps members build their skills progressively.
As members progress through the programme, they can work towards milestone certifications recognising their development.
These stages reflect increasing levels of confidence and competence in professional communication and advocacy.
More importantly, they provide clear evidence of commitment to professional development, which can be valuable when applying for pupillage, training contracts, or legal roles.
Who Is the Academy For?
One of the biggest misconceptions about advocacy training is that it’s only for elite law students or future barristers.
That simply isn’t true.
The Legal Skills Academy is designed for:
Law Students
who want to build practical skills alongside their academic studies.
Non-Law Graduates
who are transitioning into the legal profession and want to build confidence.
Graduates and Career Changers
who want to continue developing their skills while applying for roles.
Junior Lawyers
who want to sharpen their communication and advocacy in a supportive environment.
You don’t need to be the most confident speaker in the room. You just need to be willing to practise.
A Supportive Community
One thing we hear again and again from members is that the Academy provides something they struggle to find elsewhere: a supportive learning environment.
Traditional mooting and advocacy competitions can sometimes feel intimidating, competitive, or exclusive.
The Legal Skills Academy takes a different approach.
It’s a community where members encourage each other, share ideas, and improve together.
If you lose your train of thought mid-submission, nobody will judge you. We’ll help you find your place again.
Because confidence grows fastest in an environment where people feel comfortable trying.
Ready to Find Your Voice?
If you’ve ever watched others take part in mooting or advocacy training and thought:
"I could never do that."
The Legal Skills Academy was built for you.
You don’t need a perfect speaking voice. You don’t need years of experience.
You just need the willingness to show up and practise.
We provide the materials, the structure, and the community.
You provide the effort.
And over time, the confidence follows.
