Bail Application Competition
Winter Cup Series 2021

Sat 23rd January 2021
Sat 30th January 2021
Sat 6th February 2021

About the competitions

The Bail Application Competition Winter Cup 2021 will consist of 3 separate competitions on three dates. Choose the date most convenient to you. All 3 competitions are open to law undergraduates/graduates, GDL students and graduates, Bar Course students, LPC students and Masters students. Participants enter as individuals rather than teams and represent themselves and not their university. There is therefore no limit on the number of students that can enter from any given institution. You can only enter on one date though.

Submissions will be limited to 5 minutes per participant. The bundle will be sent to participants on Saturday 16th January 2021. This means that if you are in the first competition, you have a week to prepare. If you are in the second competition, you will have 2 weeks to prepare. If you are in the third, you have 3 weeks to prepare. The bundle will include all  of the required materials, meaning no additional research is required. As this is a bail application competition, no drafting will be required. As there is no research or drafting, participants will be tested on their oral advocacy alone. The competition is judged by practising barristers and solicitors. .

How it Works

There are three separate competitions. Each will take place on Zoom. The dates are:

Saturday 23rd January 2021 9:30 am to 2:30 pm

Saturday 30th January 2021 9:30 am to 2:30 pm

Saturday 6th February 2021 9:30 am to 2:30 p

Competition format

The target size for each competition is 40 participants. Everyone that signs up will take part in the competition. The competition will take place over the course of a single day. We will therefore go from having 40 competitors all the way to having a winner in a single day.

For the first round, the 40 competitors will be split into 8 groups of 5. Each group will have their own judge. One by one, each competitor in a group will perform the bail application in front of the judge. The judge will determine the winner of the group and that individual will go through to the next round.

The remaining 32 participants that didn’t progress will have a second opportunity to go through. These 32 participants will be split into 8 groups of 4. They will each have the opportunity to present their bail application to a different judge. The judge will determine the winner from each group.

There will therefore be 16 participants progressing to round 2. These will be split into 4 groups of 4. They will each perform their bail application in round 2. The judge will decide the winner from each group. This means that 4 participants will proceed to the final.

In the final, the 4 competitors will perform their bail application one final time in front of a panel of judges. The winner and runner up will then be decided by the panel.

Prize

The winner of each competition will receive a £75.00 Amazon voucher. The runner up of each competition will receive a £30.00 Amazon voucher.

Cost

The cost for entry to the competition is £15.00.
